The Mediterranean is likely to shape your activities, too, here on the Argentario peninsula. Grab a snorkel and take the path down to the rocky shore or hire a boat (with skipper, perhaps) from Porto Ercole and sail around the coast. At Porto Santo Stefano, you could cross to the island of Giglio. Or stay on dry land and head north to the pine-fringed beaches of Grosseto and south across the Lazio border to Rome.

But first explore your villa, a striking cluster of buildings and terraces that manages to blend in with this protected landscape thanks to the clever fusion of wood, glass, stone and cement.

Park your car and take the steps down through the trees, passing the tennis court, to a path that runs above the private pool – here’s where you’ll first glimpse of the ocean. You’ll emerge on a wide terrace large enough to hold three sitting areas and a dining space. Here, too, are the sea-facing entrances to the six en-suite double and twin bedrooms for your 12 guests.

Steps lead up to a semi-open dining room and a sitting room with a wall of glass offering elevated views of the Med. Go up again to another dining area and the kitchen. Even here, in the heart of the villa, you'll find a window to peep through. At Villa Cala Piccola, the sea is star of the show.
